OFSTED November 2010
Bishopswood Junior School is a good school with outstanding features OFSTED inspectors reported.
OFSTED found that although children enter the school with broadly average basic skills, they leave Bishopswood Junior School with attainment that is significantly above average in Mathematics whilst maintaining their progress in English. This is achieved through a thorough assessment and tracking system which monitors individual progress and provides information which is used by teachers to plan for individual needs.
With all the discussion over the importance of discipline in schools, we are delighted that the inspectors recognised the outstanding behaviour of BJS pupils toward others and their work. It allows staff to deliver effective lessons which were found to be consistently good so that accelerated progress is made by many BJS children.
Staff have also been designing a new curriculum that was described as good and developing well as it provides opportunities for pupils to apply their skills in interesting and purposeful situations which has contributed to their improved attainment and progress. It was recognised that the school had a good capacity to improve by developing these opportunities even further and by encouraging BJS pupils to better understand the diverse communities and cultures within the UK. Mr Burt, the Chair of Governors is confident that the staff and pupils will continue to work hard so that the excellent progress already made to secure this good judgement will be built upon.
Across the school, the Inspectors were very impressed with the 'very high levels of care, guidance and support' as well as with the links that have been made with the local community and an international school in Uganda, describing some of these features as outstanding.
Pupils were eager to share their views about the school with the inspection team and one child commented,
“Success through caring is our motto and it is followed here!”
